How to Choose a Projector for a Small Office or Meeting Room (South Africa)
Share
Choosing a projector for a small office or meeting room is different from picking one for a dark home cinema. In a workspace you're fighting ambient light and short distances, so the priorities are brightness, throw distance and connectivity — not deep cinema contrast. Here's how to get it right, with picks from our projector range.
1. Prioritise brightness (lumens)
Meeting rooms usually have lights on and windows open, so brightness beats everything. Aim for a high-lumen model rather than a dim cinema projector. The Optoma X400LVe (R7,800) is a cost-effective, bright choice for slides, spreadsheets and video calls in a typical lit boardroom.
2. Match the throw distance to the room
In a compact room you can't place the projector far from the wall, so a short-throw model earns its keep — it fills a large screen from close up and avoids shadows when someone stands to present. The Optoma ZK430ST (R35,763) is a sharp 4K short-throw laser that suits small-to-mid meeting rooms. (For the difference between short-throw and ultra-short-throw, see our short-throw guide.)
3. Resolution and connectivity
For presentations, XGA or WUXGA is plenty; choose 4K only if you'll show detailed visuals or video. Check the inputs you need — HDMI for laptops, and wireless casting if your team presents from phones (see how to connect a phone wirelessly).
4. Larger venues and permanent installs
For training rooms, auditoriums or boardrooms with high ceilings, step up to a professional laser installation projector. Epson's EB-L laser series runs from roughly 6,000 to 20,000 lumens — enough to stay crisp on a big screen in a bright space — with the reliability a permanent install needs.
Quick checklist
- Lit room: go bright — high lumens over cinema contrast.
- Small room: short-throw to avoid shadows and fit the space.
- Presentations: XGA/WUXGA is enough; 4K only if you need fine detail.
- Team presenting from devices: make sure wireless casting or the right ports are there.
