Are Short-Throw Projectors Worth It for Small Spaces?
Share
If you can't put a projector several metres back from the screen, a short-throw or ultra-short-throw model isn't just a nice-to-have — it's what makes a projector workable at all. For small lounges, apartments and tight rooms, they're usually worth the investment. Here's why, and how to choose, from our projector range.
What "throw" actually means
Throw distance is how far the projector sits from the screen to produce a given image size. A standard projector needs roughly 3–5 metres to fill a large screen. A short-throw does it from about a metre, and an ultra-short-throw (UST) from just centimetres away — sitting on a console right beneath the screen.
Short-throw: big image, little space
A short-throw like the Optoma ZH450ST (R32,120) fills a large screen from close up, so you avoid mounting it at the back of the room and you don't cast shadows when you walk past. For a 4K short-throw, the Optoma ZK430ST (R35,763) is a sharp option that also works well in small meeting rooms.
Ultra-short-throw: the cleanest install of all
An ultra-short-throw such as the Epson EH-LS650W (R41,968) sits on a cabinet centimetres from the wall — no ceiling mount, no cables across the floor. It effectively replaces a big-screen TV. For premium 4K UST home cinema, the Epson QB1000B (R114,661) brings reference picture quality to the same tidy footprint.
So are they worth it?
Yes, if your space is tight. The benefits are real: no long ceiling cable runs, no shadows, fast and tidy setup, and a TV-like install with UST. The trade-offs to know:
- They cost a little more than an equivalent standard projector.
- UST models are fussy about a flat wall or screen — any ripple shows up because the light hits at a steep angle. A proper projector screen is strongly recommended.
- If you happen to have a long, dedicated room, a standard projector can give you more image for the money.
