How to Connect Your Phone to a Projector Wirelessly (iPhone & Android)
Share
Want to throw photos, YouTube or a presentation from your phone onto the big screen without cables? There are three reliable ways to connect a smartphone to a projector wirelessly. Here's how each works, for both iPhone and Android.
Option 1: A smart projector with built-in casting (easiest)
The simplest route is a projector with Android TV or Chromecast built in, like the Epson EH-LS650W. Connect the projector to your Wi-Fi, open a Chromecast-enabled app (YouTube, Netflix, Google Photos) on your phone, tap the Cast icon and pick the projector. Done — no extra hardware.
Option 2: Add a casting dongle to any projector
If your projector isn't "smart," plug a streaming dongle (Chromecast, or an AirPlay/Miracast-compatible adapter) into a spare HDMI port and power it from USB. The dongle joins your Wi-Fi, and you cast or mirror to it exactly as above. This turns almost any projector with a free HDMI input into a wireless one.
Option 3: Native screen mirroring
iPhone / iPad: use AirPlay. Swipe into Control Centre, tap Screen Mirroring, and select an AirPlay-capable projector or dongle on the same Wi-Fi network.
Android: use the built-in Cast or Smart View / Screen Mirroring feature (the name varies by brand) from the quick-settings panel, then choose the projector or Miracast dongle.
If wireless won't cooperate: the wired fallback
Wireless mirroring depends on both devices sharing a stable Wi-Fi network, and some streaming apps block mirroring for copyright reasons. When you need rock-solid reliability — a big presentation, say — a USB-C-to-HDMI (most modern Android phones) or Lightning-to-HDMI (older iPhones) adapter gives a guaranteed, lag-free connection straight into the projector's HDMI port.
Quick tips
- Put the phone and the projector (or dongle) on the same Wi-Fi network.
- For video, prefer the app's built-in Cast button over full-screen mirroring — it streams in higher quality with less lag.
- Keep the phone awake, or disable auto-lock, during a presentation.
