Soundbars with Built-In Voice Assistants (Alexa & Google)
Some soundbars do more than play your TV — they have a voice assistant built right in, with far-field microphones so you can ask for music, control smart-home devices or check the weather without reaching for a phone or remote. Here's how voice assistants work on soundbars and which models include them, from our soundbar range.
"Built-in" vs "works with" — the key difference
There are two levels to know:
- Built-in — the soundbar has its own microphones and responds to "Hey Google" or "Alexa" directly, acting like a smart speaker.
- Works with — the soundbar has no mic, but you control it through a separate Amazon Echo or Google Nest speaker you already own.
If hands-free voice control matters to you, look specifically for built-in.
Harman Kardon Citation — Google Assistant built in
The Harman Kardon Citation 700 (R11,045) has the Google Assistant built in — ask it to play music, answer questions or control compatible smart-home gear hands-free, and stream over Chromecast and AirPlay. It's a genuine smart speaker and a serious soundbar in one.
Samsung Q-series — Alexa built in on select models
Select Samsung Q-series soundbars, including the flagship HW-Q990F (R17,588), include Alexa built in, so you get hands-free voice alongside a full 11.1.4-channel Atmos system. Always confirm the exact model's spec, as voice support varies across the range.
What about JBL, Sony and the others?
Many bars without a built-in mic still work with your existing Alexa or Google speaker, and stream via AirPlay, Chromecast or Bluetooth from your phone's assistant. So even a JBL Bar 1000 Pro fits neatly into a smart home — you just talk to your Echo or Nest rather than the bar itself.
Choosing one
- Want to talk to the bar directly? Choose built-in (Harman Kardon Citation, select Samsung Q-series).
- Already own an Echo or Nest? A works-with bar is fine and often cheaper.
- Check it streams the way you like — AirPlay, Chromecast, Spotify Connect.
