Projector Display Technologies Explained: DLP, 3LCD, D-ILA, Lamp vs Laser
Share
"What type of projector should I buy?" really comes down to two things: the imaging technology that creates the picture, and the light source that powers it. Get those right and everything else follows. Here's how the main projector types differ — and which suits a home cinema, a lounge or a boardroom. For specific model picks, see our full guide to the best projectors in South Africa.
The three imaging technologies
3LCD (Epson): light passes through three LCD panels — one each for red, green and blue — then recombines into one image. The result is bright, vivid, accurate colour with no "rainbow effect." It's the technology behind most Epson projectors, from home cinema models to high-lumen installation units.
DLP (Optoma, Barco): a chip covered in microscopic tilting mirrors reflects light to form the image. DLP is prized for sharpness, strong contrast and excellent motion handling — great for sport and gaming. Single-chip DLP powers the Optoma range; high-end three-chip DLP drives commercial Barco projectors. The one quirk: a small percentage of viewers notice a brief "rainbow" flash on single-chip models.
D-ILA / LCoS (JVC): a reflective technology that delivers the deepest native black levels and contrast of any home projector — which is why JVC D-ILA models are the reference choice for dedicated, light-controlled cinema rooms.
Lamp vs laser: the light source matters as much as the chip
Older projectors use a replaceable lamp — cheaper upfront, but the bulb dims over time and needs replacing every 3,000–5,000 hours. A laser light source costs more initially but lasts around 20,000 hours, turns on instantly, holds brightness consistently and is effectively maintenance-free. For any permanent installation, laser is usually the smarter long-term buy, which is why most of the mid- and high-end models we stock are laser.
Which type should you choose?
- Dedicated dark cinema room: JVC D-ILA, or a laser Epson 3LCD, for the best contrast and colour.
- Living room with some ambient light: a bright DLP or 3LCD laser that punches through the light.
- Sport & gaming focus: DLP, for its fast motion handling.
- Boardroom or venue: high-lumen 3LCD or three-chip DLP installation projectors.
